Kaeptain America

36x48 - Acrylic, Spray paint, and Ink on canvas, 2022

Okay this is my favorite piece and really my pride and joy. I started this piece right after the George Floyd protests. I always really admired Colin Kaepernick as an athlete and for the stand that he made - but I confess that it never really hit home until the protests in 2020. We are always taught when we are little to stand up for what we believe is right, no matter what - and I can’t think of very many athletes who embody that like him.

I started this piece with visions of grandeur and of my creating this masterpiece as an ode to him and it just didn’t come together. It was flat and boring and I found it really discouraging (see below). So, I just set it off to the side and worked on it periodically over the course of about 2 years. Painting and repainting, working and reworking. And I finally hit this, the finished product, and I decided that, while there is still more I’d like to do, I can’t do any of it without taking away from the rest of it. So, here it is!
