Origin of Species

30x48” Acrylic on Canvas - 2021

Many of my works are very planned and structured - even if there is a lot of color splashing and improvisation on the finishing touches, the whole painting is sketched and planned meticulously. For this one, I wanted to change it up! So, I had a rough idea for what I wanted to do, and I had a sketch on the canvas, but once I had that I threw caution to the wind and decided to actively avoid coloring in between the lines.

The result is a familiar motif (I love some simian subjects) but with a different style than the rest of mine. It’s all very loose brush strokes, and in some cases there aren’t any brush strokes - I used a palette knife in stead. This is one that I really enjoyed because of the change, and will probably come back to before too long when I lose my creative spark.
